CMT MUSIC AWARDS: WHEN WHERE & WHO!

If you talk to anybody who was alive at all in the 80s and 90s, they may bring up the fact that music videos were a big deal. And yes, they were: during the late 90s, MTV’s Total Request Live countdown show reached up to as many as 853,000 viewers every day it aired.  And for a show about music videos that focused on everything BUT country music, that was a huge audience. Conversely, if I were to ask you if music videos are even a thing anymore you’d probably say “Hell, they still make ’em?” But what might shock you is that since CMT started airing country music videos in 1983, artists continue to up their video game.  And this year, CMT is gearing up for their annual Music Awards.  Here’s what to expect!

THE FORMAT

The CMT Music Awards work a little differently than Billboard, the Grammys, the ACM Awards and the CMAs (that many acronyms in one sentence makes me dizzy!) At this festival, fans are the only voters, and you can only vote on cmt.com. The categories are pretty straightforward; Male, Female, Duo & Group Videos Of The Year.  There’s also Breakthrough and Collaborative Video Of The Year, as well as Performance Of The Year (which is only for live performances).

But the biggest difference is that every nominee in every category is a MUSIC VIDEO (except for Performance Of The Year).  While the hardware that comes with winning is still presented to the artists, CMT has taken this approach since 2002, figuring that all the other award ceremonies go about handing awards out cookie-cutter style.

At least it’s guaranteed these two won’t be hosting the big CMT shindig.

The casts are for my fingers. One coming soon for my brain.

The CMT Music Awards are June 5th, and the show will be live from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. CMT on Comcast is channel 686, on DirecTV channel 327, and dish Network channel 166.  We’ll be chatting more about the show leading up to the big night on the air, and I’m sure the winners will be making their way around the water coolers!
