Week 1 of the XFL is in the books! Unfortunately, the Seattle Dragons lost, but that’s alright. It’s the start of a new league, and it’s more football! I was cautiously optimistic about this new league, given the track record of football leagues not named the NFL over the years. The original XFL only lasted one season, and seemed to be more focused on the spectacle than the sport. Last year, the Alliance of American Football (AAF) didn’t even make it through a season.
What makes this XFL different? The quality of play is much better. No, the players aren’t as good as the NFL, but you’d be kidding yourself if you expected that to be the case. Also, it’s not attempting to compete with the NFL. It’s a fun spring football league with guys that are getting a second chance at professional football. The rules are mostly modeled after the NFL and NCAA, with a few notable exceptions (Kickoffs and extra point attempts look a lot different). The officiating is also pretty good, or it was for the first week anyway. You also get a cool look into the replay reviews, and that brings me to the best part.
The access that the XFL has during their TV broadcasts is unheard of! You get live interviews during the game with coaches and players, coaches and players are mic’d up so you get to hear them call in the plays! Heck, they even take you into the locker room at halftime! Great first impression, fun to watch, and I can’t wait to watch more of the XFL!
